Rural Maryland business working to develop a more sustainable solution for electricity storage

COLUMBIA, Md., (May 20, 2025)TEDCO, Maryland’s economic engine for technology companies, announced a recent $25,000 Rural Business Innovation Initiative (RBII) Pre-Seed investment in Forager Station. TEDCO’s RBII was designed to enhance technology commercialization and provide technical and business assistance to small and early-stage companies based in rural Maryland.

“Lithium is a mineral that is key for efficient electricity storage,” said Patrick Ho, CEO of Forager Station. “This lower-cost and flexible option supports the advancement of innovation and technology, without the excess pollution that traditional methods create. Thanks to TEDCO’s investment, we can continue our goals. We hope to make a significant impact that will support Maryland and beyond.”

Forager Station, located in Frederick, Md., is a company working to commercialize electrochemical direct lithium extraction from saltwater brines. The company hopes this development will increase the U.S. supply of lithium and transform the country from a lithium importer to a lithium exporter.

“Innovation is not confined to city centers – Forager Station is a great example of this reality, calling rural Maryland home,” said Graham Dodge, vice president of Venture Development. “This reality is what fuels TEDCO’s RBII program. We are actively seeking to support the innovators located in rural areas, connect them with resources and help lead innovation to market.”

Forager Station has taken advantage of many TEDCO resources and opportunities including being an active member of DefTech, a participant in the SBIR/STTR Proposal Lab, Prelude Pitch and Market Search opportunities.

“Maryland is known as ‘little America’ for a reason,” said TEDCO CEO, Troy LeMaile-Stovall. “This amazing state has a diverse range of landscapes, climates, historical influences and, most importantly, people. Through this diversity, emerging businesses are primed to thrive. After all, Baltimore City is ranked by Business Insider as the 15th best city for entrepreneurs. Add that to the melting pot that is Maryland, and you have a recipe for success.”
