Biotechnology company innovates treatment for pets with lumps, bumps and cancer

COLUMBIA, Md., (September 9, 2025) — TEDCO, Maryland’s economic engine for technology companies, announced a recent $500,000 Pre-Seed Builder Fund investment in Kubanda Cryotherapy. Under the umbrella of TEDCO’s Social Impact Funds, the Pre-Seed Builder Fund invests in and provides support to Maryland-based technology companies led by founders from economically underserved backgrounds.

“We are excited to continue increasing access to care in the veterinary tumor market,” said Bailey Surtees, CEO and co-founder, Kubanda Cryotherapy. “We deeply appreciate TEDCO’s continued support and investment in Maryland’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.”

Kubanda Cryotherapy, located in Baltimore, Md., developed a treatment for lumps, bumps and tumors in pets that aims to be minimally invasive. Using cryoablation technology, their innovation works to kill cells through the formation of intracellular ice crystals. This procedure could offer faster healing time than surgery, chemo, or radiation, and costs a fraction of the price for pet parents, broadening access to care for pets.

“TEDCO’s Builder Fund typically initially invests $100,000 with follow on investments up to $750,000 via convertible notes to portfolio companies,” said Jean-Luc Park, deputy chief investment officer and senior director, Social Impact Funds. “These investments offer much more than just funding – we offer opportunities for hands-on and educational support, peer-to-peer mentorship and collaboration, and even networking opportunities.”

Kubanda Cryotherapy utilized several of TEDCO’s resources, including the Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII), where they received a Company Formation award, the SBIR/STTR Proposal Lab and a previous investment from the Social Impact Funds in 2024.

“As one of the top states for venture capital investments, Maryland is a place where businesses and startups can grow,” said TEDCO CEO, Troy LeMaile-Stovall. “For entrepreneurs and innovators looking for opportunities that support business expansion, including investments and other valuable resources, considering Maryland as a homebase could be a difference maker.”
