AI company creating ‘modern time-capsule’ for families

COLUMBIA, Md., (May 18, 2026) — TEDCO, Maryland’s economic engine for technology companies, announced a recent $100,000 Pre-Seed Builder Fund investment in Sommos. The Pre-Seed Builder Fund rests under the organization’s Social Impact Funds umbrella, created to support underserved founders and communities.
“Every family carries stories that explain who we are, where we come from and what we hope the next generation will remember. Yet some estimates suggest as much as 80% of family knowledge is lost within three generations, when it is not captured. Sommos was created to help families answer simple daily story prompts, record voices across generations and organize those stories by person, theme and moment. Over time, Sommos works to surface the patterns and connections across a family’s stories, helping people better understand themselves and one another,” said Nicole Foster, CEO of Sommos. “With this investment from TEDCO, we can reach more families; we are beginning with English- and Spanish-speaking communities and building toward a multilingual platform for families around the world.”

Located in Baltimore, MD., Sommos is working to use AI to help families record voices across generations, organize stories by person and theme and preserve the connections that shape who they are.
“The Social Impact Funds were created to support the Socially and Economically Disadvantaged Individual innovators across the state, and we are glad to continue to support Maryland’s ecosystem this way,” said Jean-Luc Park, deputy chief investment officer & senior director, Social Impact Funds.
TEDCO’s Pre-Seed Builder Fund pairs funding with hands-on support. Portfolio companies gain access to mentorship, operational guidance and TEDCO’s statewide network, helping founders navigate early growth and prepare for future investment.
“With a workforce ranking number one in the country for professional and technical workers, a 3,000 mile shoreline and an incredible boating community, Maryland is a prime location for entrepreneurs and founders to work, live and have fun,” said TEDCO CEO, Troy LeMaile-Stovall. “And for those in the technology and life sciences industries—there is even more to offer across the state.”
