Collaboration between Lightwork Enterprise and TEDCO aims to highlight the next generation of Maryland’s startup founders
COLUMBIA, Md., (March 16, 2026) — TEDCO, Maryland’s economic engine for technology companies, announces the return of the Future Founders: University Innovators Pitch Competition at the 2026 Entrepreneur Expo. In collaboration with Lightwork Enterprise, the competition provides a dynamic forum for emerging entrepreneurs from universities across Maryland to showcase innovative ventures with the potential to transform industries and address pressing challenges.
Lightwork Enterprise co-founder Shannon Collins emphasized the importance of continuing the collaboration to uplift emerging innovators, “Lightwork Enterprise is proud to collaborate again with TEDCO to celebrate the vision and creativity of university founders. These innovators represent the next generation of trailblazers and we are committed to helping elevate their ideas and amplify their impact.”
TEDCO’s award-winning Entrepreneur Expo was established to spotlight entrepreneurship in the region by bringing together Maryland’s various resources for a day of celebration. Last year, the event attracted more than 1,170 attendees, including some of the region’s top entrepreneurs, business owners, innovators, venture capital investors and legislators. This year’s Expo will take place in Baltimore—one of the top 20 best cities for entrepreneurs—promising a full day of interactive workshops, insightful discussions and dynamic pitches from emerging companies.
“TEDCO’s Entrepreneur Expo was created to be a platform for connection, learning and inspiration,” said Tammi Thomas, chief development & marketing officer, TEDCO. “Last year, TEDCO awarded a total of $6,850 to the five winners: Modelus, Ovelia Health, AutoAspira, Medikeet and CeeVlo. We are excited to extend this opportunity to Maryland college students for another year as we learn about the latest innovative efforts budding in universities.”
The Future Founders Pitch Competition was designed to celebrate bold ideas while strengthening Maryland’s growing innovation ecosystem by connecting student founders with the resources, networks and recognition needed to bring their ventures to life. Finalists will take the stage during the 2026 Entrepreneur Expo, where they will receive valuable feedback, expanded visibility within the innovation ecosystem and opportunities to connect with mentors, partners and potential supporters who can help accelerate their ventures.

University students who wish to participate in the pitch competition must submit their applications by June 8, 2026. Each application must include a recommendation from a professor or staff member of the university’s entrepreneurship or innovation center.
