A funding provider of new tech firms and a unit of one of the nation’s largest African American banks is offering black entrepreneurs up to $40,000 each to launch a tech company in Maryland.

Three local startups will receive up to $40,000 each in investments from the Maryland Technology Development Corp. and Harbor Bank as part of a new fund specifically targeted at black business owners.

The Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission has awarded $8.5 million to 29 projects that will explore how human stem cells can regenerate heart tissue, treat muscular dystrophy and sickle cell disease, and aid diabetes management, among other medical conditions.
