State-backed investments in stem cell research have resulted in the creation of nearly 1,400 new jobs over the past 10 years, according to new data from Maryland Technology Development Corp.

It’s the second round for the program from TEDCO and Harbor Bank Community Development Corporation.

And though no formal competition was held for the last set of investments, Maryland Technology Development Corp. also announced three new awardees for its Minority Business Pre-Seed Fund.

TEDCO and The Harbor Bank of Maryland Community Development Corp. announced the awards for the three companies from the Minority Business Pre-Seed Fund, each of which will receive up to $40,000.

TEDCO CEO George Davis said this latest round of investments supports the mission to foster entrepreneurship and innovation across the state and to “build great companies that grow, stay and last in Maryland.”

What does it take to start a cyber venture? The recipe includes networking within the right circles, identifying opportunities, putting together a team to make it happen, and being comfortable with risk.

UMB and Hopkins recently collaborated on two different incubator projects as part of a funding competition presented by the Maryland Technology Development Corp. Both projects will now be brought to life, using the $125,000 they each won in the challenge.

TEDCO is partnering with local investment and advisory firm Evergreen Advisors to grow a program that offers startups temporary access to experienced executives.
